- Moissanite is a natural mineral, also known as silicon carbide. It was discovered in 1893 by French chemist Henri Moissan, after whom it was named.
- Although it is not a diamond, moissanite shares many of its optical properties, including high hardness (9.25 on the Mohs scale), brilliance, and durability.
- In addition, moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond. In practical terms, this means it emits more intense brilliance and light reflections, with iridescent hues.
- These characteristics make moissanite a popular choice for jewelry, as it offers an affordable alternative to diamonds while retaining beauty and durability.
